I've got a Case 530 and the clutch is slipping. I replaced the clutch not too long ago. I adjusted the linkage, and that's not why it's slipping. It's either oil on the plates, or something else. And I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this. Is there a way to adjust the pressure place arms for more force? I can't believe it. I'm not about to get enthusiastic about pulling a tractor apart for this after having done it just a year or two ago. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gregg

I would check your hand clutch. It has been a while since mine slipped, but I used to push foward on the handle with my foot and it would stop slipping. It is under the shift cover. There are three (I think) milk bottle pins. You need to pull out the one that is engaged and rotate the assembly till the next one clicks in. Do this until the hand clutch has a nice snap. Sorry for the lack of detail but I haven't done this for over 20 years. Good luck.

This tractor doesn't have a hand clutch. Oh dear. I thought this was going to be a simple problem to solve. I can't believe it's slipping. Must be grease. I thought oil and grease didn't cause this kind of situation. I've had oily plates that didn't slip.

Hmmmmm ...

I did have a JD clutch that slipped even with a clutch plate that wasn't worn. The problem was caused when I lost the throw out bearing (the original didn't have a grease fitting, the replacement one did) and there was a lot of fine dirt and rust particles which some how got packed between the clutch plates preventing it from closing. I split the tractor and the fix was tapping on the clutch assembly for about 45 minutes to get it all out. Strangest thing I have seen, but matches your symptoms. I could have done it in the tractor if I had known this was the problem. If it is grease, you might be able to clean it some with brake cleaner. Use the none flammable stuff with the clutch open. If, it changes the situation, you probably will have to split the tractor. I hate splitting one not knowing if I am going after the right thing.

Yeehaw! That made a difference. in reply to Mapleridge, 06-18-2005 05:14:42
I pushed the clutch down and let it slap back up a few times. And there is a noticeable difference in starting out in 4th gear. Thanks.

Just a comment, but does this 530 have the triples range transmissiom??and a hand clutch?
I recently bought a 311 from a fellow that had replaced the clutch, but still slipping, I guess he wasn't familiar with the hand clutch, I adjusted it and fixed the problem. The manual says it should snap-in with about 60#'s of force.
Maybe it don't affect this tractor though?

Would your hand clutch be slipping? It will act like the foot clutch. Does it have a good snap to it? It will adjust after you take the top off the range shifter. It adjust like the old hand or pto clutch on the other case tractors.

Did you replace the pressure plate and have the flywheel machined?

Yes. And it's been working fine for several years. Not much use on it either. Now it is slipping for whatever reason. I did the machining myself. A perfect job. I've done many. I'm hoping there's an adjustment on the pressure plate. Or some kind of technique someone has discovered.

I still need to get a light in there and look around. But I think the disc is essentially new.

As long as you have free travel on your petal, that's about it for adjustments. The G15048 guage is used to set the release fingers or 2 inches from the clutch cover. On some of the "green tractors" we would place flatwashers under the springs to help the clutch hold, you might see if that can be done with this type of cover.
