Today I picked up the new bearing for the engine clutch pinion shaft. The old bearing had a steel shield where the new bearing is open. Does this make a difference?

I think Allan may have thought you meant the pilot bearing on the clutch plate. My experience is with DC's but, if it is the main drive pinion bearing in the cast gear housing, it gets oil from the transmission. We take the seal off on the inside, so it catches oil from the pinion gear. Also, there is oil to the clutch side as well, but it is thinner (engine oil) and the level is quite low. My 2 cents worth. I'm sure the sealed bearing will last a long time if you decide to use it that way.

The story on bearings goes like this. Open ones came first, then shielded - like you have - 1 or 2 sided, then sealed, which has the grease sealed into the bearing with a shield with a rubberized seal on it. Sealed is far superior. Only reason for an open one any more is for a transmission or something where it's running in oil. There's no way to grease a pilot bearing, so the answer is sealed. They just didn't have them in 1937.
