Here is a picture of the 1951 DC-4. Every bolt, bushing, and bearing was removed, inspected, and replaced if neccessary. We had to make the fenders, battery cover, PTO shield, air stack, clutchplate, brake plates, crank, and front end filler block. The engine now has replaceable rod bearings and oil seals on the valves, but it is as close to 100% original as I can get it.

Really cool tractor - give us details on the rod bearings and valve seals. My SC will need a rebuild someday and since it is 12v/distributor I will be more interested in making it run better than making it original.

Hi Ted: Beautiful tractor! In your taking every bolt and fastener apart, what were some of the more worn items? What surprises did you find? Thanks, Glenn F.

In answer to Andy's question, no, we used the original crankshaft. We don't have the steel quality to turn one from stock, it's an interesting concept though.

We tore down 4 DC's. I was surprised that it appeared none had ever had the rear end chains tightened. One was so streched it was actually wearing groves in the housing and had locked up the differential. Another surprise was that the main pinion gear bearing (the double row one on the input shaft) in all of them, though still functional, was due to be replaced. Most other bearings were still ok but we changed them out due to a cheap original supply.

I guess the most fasinating thing was the durability of these machines after 50+ years of service! Second gear was the most worn and we resurfaced a couple. We did have one with M&W pistons with the rear main broken. It appeared that he never took out the shims to tighten the crank.

Excellent! I've got a worn out D engine that i'm going to have a go at putting some replaceable shells in. Just out of interest more than anything. Its good fun doing stuff like that. Did you forge the crank? The only reason i ask is that i've seen a 1/2 size McLaren traction engine over here in England, with a crankshaft that was machined from a solid bar of EN40b nitriding steel or something like that. This is a big engine and the crank is of a similar length to a D (only two con rods off it though) Wondered what you guys think about that, whether it would work for a model D crank? Quite a lot of work machining wise but it worked for him!

Good luck with your other projects and i look forward to more pictures soon.
