Case L Transmission Bearings

I pulled the transmission cover and found the first and second transmission reduction shafts to be tight with no end play. The bearings turn free and smooth. I dissambled the pinion shaft bearing and found it to be rough. When I turn it, there are little catches like speed bumps.

Since I am this far into the transmission, should I dig deeper and pull the 1st and 2nd reduction shafts? Is there a better way to check the reduction shaft bearings while they are still in the tractor? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

If the shafts are tight & smooth I would leave them. The clutch shaft bearing is the weak point on these. Replace it and you'll likely be fine. If there is wear on the gear it may make a little noise. Check the drive chains while you're in there.

Thanks Allen,

I used a stethoscope to listen to the bearings in the 1st reduction gear. They sound smooth. I have got myself into messes by fixing things that are not broke. That is why I am hesitant about going hog wild on this. I have never messed with transmission bearings either. I did check the chains and they are at the correct tension.

I did have play in the clutch shaft prior to taking it out of the transmission. I think a combination of the clutch shaft bearing and the pilot bearing are causing my problems. Can you think of anything else to check while I am into it? I appreciate the help.

I think you'll find those are the only real problems. On the LA they went to a bigger double race bearing on the pinion because of it. Check the mesh of the bevel when you get the new bearing on, but it is usually pretty close.
