Just started restoration on my '57 311 round nose and realized that the generator had been replaced by an alternator that is larger in diameter than whatever was original. Problem is that the sheet metal has been bulged out to accomodate the larger alternator and now what to do given that I have new hood side panels coming. Can anyone suggest a solution? Smaller diameter alternator? (What do I ask for?) Generator? (Where would I get one?) Would there be other electrical parts that would need replacement? (I think in 1957 this was a 6V system but it has been converted to 12V.) HELP!

If you are fixing her up to use stay with the alernator. Generators can be expensive, unrelieable, and a pain to keep going. I restored a 351 that I installed an alternator on that I did not have to modify the sheet metal. Yesterday I built alternator brackets for a 52 VAC that I'm resyoring.

Jim, can you give me some details on the alternator you installed (brand, part number)? I don't mind sticking with the alternator (although my 67 Volvo has a generator that has never failed), but I do want to have the very expensive side panels I have ordered to fit!

Here's a generator that may work. It is a message posted by Joe Young.

I too had the same situation. I ended up buying a 12 volt generator. I first tried custom made brackets, smaller belt, ect. Anyway, the generator was the best option on the 311. GL, Bernsy

Let me know if you decide to go with an original generator. I have a friend that bought a parts tractor (311) and he has generator, brackets, and voltage regulator. Gen would more than likely need rebuild. Price ??? You guys tell him. Has complete wide front adjustable axle also available. Only problem on it, is it's in California.
