Clutch / Transmission Help on 37 Case L

Tonight I split my L to find out what was causing the noise/vibration when the clutch was engaged. The pilot bearing has a catch to it and at times will lock up. Will this cause noise / vibration when the transmission is engaged?

There is also play in the engine clutch shaft. It has some up and down sideways movement. I took the shaft out and the bearing seems smooth. My experience with bearings is that there should not be play.

I really noticed my noise when we had a threshing machine belted up and running. It also was making a noise when I started plowing. Do you think I should replace the clutch shaft bearing and pilot bearing and see what happens? When I turn the belt pulley, everything seems smooth. I hate to keep digging deeper.

Another problem I had was the clutch was not releasing after being disengaged. After I disengage the clutch, (with snap) I have to lightly move the hand clutch (engage and disengage)for the clutch to fully release. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you already have the tractor apart, might as well replace the bearings and be done with it. At least you can eliminate THAT as cause for the problem.

The pilot bearing should definitely be replaced if it has any roughness / catching but it is not the cause of your vibration. Check the endplay in the cross shaft that the clutch gear meshed with and the belt pulley shaft. Also check the bevel gears carefully for wear. There are shims under the shaft end caps that you can remove to adjust the bearings if there is endplay.

I agree with AllanC, the problem is likely to be in the bearings in the belt pulley cross shaft, particularly if you have been using the tractor for belt work.

It would be worth draining the transmission oil and looking at it carefully. I have seen the bearing behind the belt pulley wear out and spread metal to all transmission bearings via the oil. It is easy to replace the bearings, but it gets expensive.
