I have recently rebuilt my 188D engine. I lined the timing marks on the crank and the cam and the injector pump. As engine turns over after about 4 turns a loud hammering noise is heard and engine does not start. I belive it is possibly the timing. If anyone can tell me the correct way to time the 188D diesel engine I would really appreciate it or any other ideas to start the engine.
This is my first time with a diesel engine.
Thanks

Make sure that #1 piston is coming up on the "compression" stroke. You may have to remove the tappet cover and watch the movement of the rocker arms on #1 cylinder. If the exhaust valve rocker just closed and intake rocker is just beginning to move, you'll need to turn the motor over one more time to get it on the compression stroke. When the timing mark on the flywheel gets to 4 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) stop turning the motor. Turn off the diesel fuel tank valve and remove the injection pump timing cover. If the two small lines don't match, loosen the three nuts holding the pump, and twist the pump until they do. Tighten the three nuts, replace the cover on the pump, turn on the tank valve, and make sure the stop cable is in the run position. If everything else is correct, the motor will start. The pump and injection lines are self bleeding. Good luck!

If only ONE timing line is visable on the #1 compression stroke, you have the fuel injection pump 180 degrees out of time. You'll need to remove the fuel injection pump, turn the pump until TWO lines are visable in the pump timing window, and reinstall the pump. Make sure #1 is on the compression stroke and the flywheel mark is set at 4 degrees BTDC as you line up the two lines. Good luck!
