530 tranny/pto question

Does filling the transmission oil also fill the pto? The tractor is a 541 standard trans, ind. pto. The manual says that the trans holds 26 qts. but doesn"t give an amount for the pto. I drained the trans and pto and got 29 qts. I"m wondering if it was overfull or if the pto holds the additional. There is a pipe plug above the pto shaft...should I fill the pto up to this plug and put 26 qts in the trans or will filling the trans do both?

By your discription, you must have the independent PTO which is activated by a long horizontal lever you lift next to your right foot. These tractors also came with a Standard PTO which you needed to push in the clutch and lift a rod with a loop with your left hand behind the seat. For the Independent PTO, there is also a drain plug on the underside of your PTO housing. The main function for the plug on the side is so you have access to the milk bottle pins that adjust the wet clutch that drives the PTO. If your PTO slips, you need to release the pin, which is a lock pin and rotate the PTO shaft till the next pin clicks in. I seem to remember that the resivors are shared but there is a drain plug because it is a low spot.

I was thinking(hoping?) the same thing Mapleridge. Trying to put oil in thru there is really slow...it doesn't seem to be for that purpose...like it's only an adjustment port. My tractor has the independant pto with the lever behind the seat sticking straight up. You push to engage and pull to disengage/brake.

One manual I have tells me it holds 24qts and another tells me 17qts for the transmission and nothing about the pto. Fill the pto up to the pipe plug, fill the trany up to the dipstick level and (if you would please) tell us what it really took to fill everything. They should be seperate cavity's. Is yours a 1965 or newer???

Tom, I believe my tractor is a 1967 model. Serial number is 8303158. My manual lists transmission capacity of 26 qts for the General Purpose Tractor and 15 qts for the Standard Tractor. I.D. tag on side of tractor says 541 which I believe makes it the General Purpose Tractor.(right?) My manual also lists oil capacity for a belt pulley, (which I don't have). This makes me wonder why, if the pto is a separate reservoir, there's no capacity listed. I'll try filling it the way you suggested although I was hoping to avoid filling the pto thru the pipe plug as it is VERY slow to take oil that way. I was really hoping that filling the trans would accomplish both. I'll let you know what I figure out. In the meantime anyone else that has input I'd appreciate it.

All of this sounds right, my books do not show any seals to seperate the oil's from one to the other. The case-o-matic tractors have a little different pto housing with a expansion plug on the lower shaft (in the front end of the pto housing). They show this housing with the lever facing forward, not vertical like yours and mine. Thats why I asked about the model year. When my rockshaft piston return line split open, it filled up my pto housing too.
