I have a question about a David Brown 990 Selectomatic I now have. The tractor has been sitting in a feild for about six or seven years. Its upper radiadtor hose was eat away by rats. Whoever parked it never covered the exaust. Do you think this tractor would be ruined? I don't know much about diesles, but I know if you get water in a car engine intake the rings will rust weld into place. Also, I have read other threads on this site which stated, "Rain is a Dvid Brown tractor's wourst enemy" because of the shift boot or something to that effect. This tractor has had no cover for all this time. Am I trying to resurrect a lost cause?

My dad and I bought a 1410 Case David Brown and like ur 990 it had been sitting a long time without a cover. We had to completely go through the engine. The pistons or rings were rusted into one place. Could not turn the engine over until we removed them. The Trans was messed up the 3 point hitch does not work.....the tractor was a total wreck. We have had fun rebuilding it but we have more money in it than we will ever get back. So be careful on buying those tractors that have been sitting for a long time.

No. They wanted $3,500. A little out side of my league. If I wanted to spend that much I would buy a running one! It had good rubber but I figured it was worth about $500 - $1,000. They claim it ran last year. Oh well, Ill keep looking.

Well i guess the first thing to do is see if the engine will turn over. Get a 3/4 drive johnson bar and use a 1 1/2 inch socket and put it on the crankshaft pulley nut and see if it will turn the engine over. Then get back to me. It has been sitting for a long time. But i have come across people who have resurected tractors like that!

I am looking at a 880 Slectomatic that has sat in the field for 3 Years. I have the same questions. The exust has not been covered. I will watch for replies. However, I was wondering what you had to pay? A range would even be helpful to establish the value of the one I am looking at. Also describe the condition of the tractor, tires, seat, etc, so I can hone in on he price I should pay. Thanks

Same can be applied to the 880. Don't pay too much for it, it could be beyond repair.

Well I saw a restored 990 in perfect condition for sale at the local Ford dearlership. They want $9000 for it. The owner of the one I bought swears up and down that if I put new hoses on it and fix the wiring (Some kids tore the ignition switch apart trying to hotwire it.) that it will run perfect. I paid $220 for mine. I just hope I din"t bie off more than I can chew. The sheetmetal has some surface rust but nothing serious. The tires look brand new when parked. But with it not moving in as many years as it has, i"m worried about rot under the tires. Three of the tires are flat. But it"s been sitting there all these years and the lift arms are still pointing strait up. Either the hydrolics are really good or they are stuck. But I hope someone gives us some insight on our questions.

Well I tried spinning the crank. Its pretty froze up. A guy at work told me I could pour brake fluid down the exhaust and let it sit. Also, to pour transmission fluid in the injector holes.
