My daughter"s 1st grade teacher just gave our family a 1948 CASE VA. Were fenders a factory option? This tractor has none - do we move forward without them? This is our first attempt at a "restoration"...also need a gas cap, any suggestions? It"s sadly sitting behind a shed, transmission is loose, water in the gas tank, can over exhaust. What is the next step? Trailer it home or attemt to get it running where she sits? Any help and direction is sorely needed and greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Travis

Got a '48 VA myself that was my Grandpa's. Fenders shouldn't be a problem, (I'll bet they were an option in '48, though) and there were a bunch of these tractors made so you should be able to find parts pretty easy. The YT site and eBay are both sources for parts, I got a working seat mount off eBay. (the seat flips up and you can stand and drive) There are several people who check out this list that have parts, and some good web pages as a resouce.

I would try to get it home before I started it. You just don't know what you might find and it's nice to have tools close at hand. A regular two-axle car trailer is good enough to carry it, it's not that heavy and that's what I used to haul mine from Montana to Wisconsin.

Used fenders are easy to find. I don't think they were an option on this particualr tractor. I think the gas cap is still available from Case/IH. How long has it been sitting? The pistons and/or valves may be stuck? Don't try to turn the engine over if the valves are stuck or you will bend the push rods. Look in the article archives on this web site. There are some good articles on freeing stuck engines and other topics.
