Eng bogs down in neutral, Case 310B

When I put the gear selector in neutral and let the clutch out, the engine bogs down slightly. Since my engine isn't running all that great right now (about to clean out the carb today) it will almost stall. If I go to 1/2 throttle, it is ok, but you can there there is a little strain on the engine. Is this a clutch adjustment issue or gears?
Thanks,
Ed

Joe, you went right over my head! Mine is only a dual range and there is no rear PTO (has a backhoe on the back), not sure if there is a 'hand clutch' or not, where would it be? There is a big lever on the left, fwd and rev, not sure if middle is neutral or not. Then a short lever on the right, seems to be low and high. I have an owners manual on the way so I can figure some of this stuff out. Thanks,
Ed

Sorry Ed, please disregard my post. I was under the impression you had tripl range with a hand clutch.

Ed, I just looked this up in the owners manual.

"DUAL-RANGE SHUTTLE (EXTRA). Provides (8) speeds forward and (8) speeds in reverse. Provides faster working cycles when using a front end loader since reverse speeds are 25% faster than forward, in any gear (see page eleven)".

On page 11 states "high speed road gear standard"

On 300B series w/o Dual-Range shuttle the high speed road gear was an optional.

Well have fun, can't say that I am not more than a little green with envy.

Thanks for the owners manual info Joe. That explains why the thing hauls butt in reverse! I guess the drop in engine rpm when I let the clutch out while in neutral is just the shuttle gears spinning? I am not sure if there is a neutral on the shuttle lever or not.

You ain't missing much without this tractor Joe, she's real rough, but functional I guess. I'll be cleaning her up and slapping a coat of paint on, will have some pics to post later this summer (if it ever stops raining here in ME!).

My tach gear is off and soak in PB by the way, hopefully she frees up.

Ed, from the manual:

Long lever on left of cover is push forward for reverse and pull back for forward.

Short lever on the right side is push forward for low range and pull back for direct drive.

Doesn't show any neutral postion.

On the tach, be sure to protect the hour drum. PB will turn it into a ball of gook if it puddles on it for a length of time.

I didn't think there was a neutral on the levers but was not positive, thanks for confirming. The speedo line just came free. The tach line is still froze up. Will go out right now and make sure none is getting on my hour meter!!!!

Got the carb apart, tons of junk. Ripped the inner gasket so I guess I will have to buy a rebuild kit, jets could probably use replacing anyhow. Took the gas tank off to remove the sediment bowl and plump in a filter and in line shutoff. ahhhhh, just remembered that I have an electric in line switch that I could run off the ign, fuel automatically shuts off when tractor is off..... . nah, don't have that much free time! Thanks for the help,
Ed

Ed, it is normal for the engine to droop slightly in that situation since you are driving the hand clutch pack, triple range gear train and part of the transmission. Try the same thing with the hand clutch disengaged, it should droop less or the hand clutch pack is dragging and needs adjustment.

To check the hand clutch pack, tractor on level surface, triple range in direct drive, transmission in 1st gear, pto disengaged at the lever on the back, disengage hand clutch, run the engine up to about 1000 rpm, now engage the foot clutch. If you have ground creep the hand clutch pack should be adjusted.
