I just bought a JI Case tractor this weekend at a auction. As with just about all used equipment it came with no manuals. I plan on restoring it to all most new condition before using it. I need to figure out the year of the tractor, to order the manuals needed. As near as I can figure out there is a 600, and 600B. The paper tag on the key has 1978 as the year, whitch I beleave is incorrect. I think it was produced around 1957. The number on the engine block is 176P12045. I couldn"t locate any data plates any where. But thats not to say there isn"t one. Anyone with any help as to the year or a way to figure the year out please feel free to respond. Also it has a half tack that is in good shape, that looks like a option that was put on at the time it was ordered from Case. But that is just a guess.

Thanks for your time and help.
Dan

Where did you buy your tractor at? I just saw a 600B sell for $2500 at an auction in mid-Michigan this past Saturday. It looked overall in VG condition and the seller said that the engine was overhauled in the last 400 hours.

Patrick,

I bought the Case 600 here in northern New York. I bought it for $1475. I thought it was a good deal. The body is is good shape with the exception of fenders that are bent up to the point of no repair. Even the wire mesh grill is dent free and has no holes in it. New rubber on back tires, 70% on front tires, new head, and oil pan gasket which tells me someone worked on the motor which sound healthy, no smoke from exaust. The half track is in good shape. There is a rear oil seal leak, the exaust was modified by some one to go down and under the tractor. They cut the exaust turned it 180 degrees and welded it. Other than that theres just the light oil leaks common older tractor. I'm sure when I go through the tractor in the weeks to come I'll find some cob job with some thing. But that go's with buying and fixing up old tractors I guess.

Later
Dan

Check on the left side where the engine flange mates to the trannsmission - should be a serial # there - stamped along the flange. You may have to look close & scrape a little, but it should be there. My '61 830 C-O-M has one stamped there. Good luck.

You are correct about the year of production. It's a late 50's tractor, and it is a 600B with a 164 CID motor with approximately 40 horsepower. The 600 is a western styled tractor with a 6 cylinder (377 CID) motor with approximately 70 horsepower. The Case-o-matic was not available on the 600. Good luck on the restoration.

All the old Case's I've been around have the model and serial # on a tag at the back of the hood on the dash. Jake
