The compression test of a 188/207 Case diesel at a 200 RPM cranking speed should be 400 PSI with no more than 25 PSI difference among cylinders. The proper degrees of timing should be found on the tappet cover. Generally, it's 4 degrees BTDC. Remove the plug on the bell housing (right side) and turn the motor until the timing marks appear. Set the timing mark at the proper number of degrees. Turn off the tank fuel valve, then remove the timing mark cover (plate with two small screws) on the fuel injection pump. Look into the pump for the timing marks. If the two small lines do not line up, loosen the three bolts holding the fuel injection pump to the motor and rotate the pump until they do. Good luck.

Re: Make sure #1 is on compression stroke.. in reply to c hess, 05-01-2005 14:15:51
Forgot to mention previously, if only one timing line is visable in the fuel injection pump opening, (even though the timing mark is set properly at the bell housing plug) you'll need to turn the motor over exactly one turn. Why? Because you're on the exhaust to intake stroke. After turning it over exactly one turn, the two lines should be close to matching. Of course, you could pull the tappet cover and watch the action of the valves on #1, but you have a 50/50 chance of hitting it right the first time (Compression stroke). Just thought you needed to know what to do if only one on the timing lines is visable. Good luck!
