I bought a couple 5-14 Case plows and between the two I will have one good one for my 930 diesel 6 speed. My land is sort of a sandy loam and in places is rather tough plowing. I have been useing 3-16s and I can tell it is back there though I dont know how she would be with another couple bottoms. Anyone done any plowing with a 930 and 5-14s? I know soil type makes all the difference also.

We have had 3 930's, (currently have 2), and one 1030. We had a nice 4-14" plow for the 930 but is was too much. It now has a 3-14" mounted plow. As you said, soil conditions mean everything. Glenn F.

Yes soil types and condition are the main factors in moldboarding that affects the size of plow and speed of pulling them.

I put the aluminum overbore pistons and sleeves in my 930; from 401 to 427. If your plow is semi mount you should get enough weight transfer to be OK. With a pull type plow, traction, not power, would be your limiting factor here in upstate NY. I had a case 5 X 16 semi mount behind my 1030 and it could rip it to pieces. The aluminum piston kit really smoothed out the 930 compared to the iron ones which were in it when new. best Phil

I heard about them alum pistons. Not sure what mine has the man I bought it from ad OHed it 1600 some hours ago and he was running a hydro swing with it alot. He told me they run it around 1800 rpm. I read that you dont what to go to higher rpms without the alum pistons so maybe mine has them?

It is hard to think that anyone would build one of those engines without putting in the aluminum pistons. I suppose anything is possible though. They are a nice horse. Mine is 8 speed comfort king, but I would love to have the other two in my barn. best, Phil

We pulled 5 14s with our 830 in Texas black land. 830 had dual range though. Pulled pretty easy in 3rd low range unless the ground was extremely dry, then had to pull in second.

My family has hda 3 differnt 930s over the years, all of them were 8 speed comfort kings. My Grandfather bought two in the 60s the first was in 68 and the secound in 69, he and my dad would put semi mount 5-14s on either one of them and plow up just about any type of PA mountian type soil we have around here. Dont know how well they would do on sand though,,never plowed sandy soil before. Right now I have a 67 930 and she keeps up with are 970 with out a problem, But we use are 1070 and 970 to plow with, I wont put her on are plows which are 4-16 and a 5-18. Went to Lift the 5-18s up one day to move them out of the way one day and instead of liftin the plows my frontend went up in the air,, Guess six weights arent quite enough. Besides Id like to get a set of new tires and her engine rebuilt for the first time after about 10,000 hours, before I hook to a plow. Till then she pulls the 10ft offset cutten disk.

Well, I plow with 6-18"'s with a 1030 and 15 front slab weights. Weight the front of that puppy down or you'll be starin at the stars. I can pull it rather nicely in my stupid !@*!@*!*@! clay. Man I hate this crap. Oh well, have fun.

Guy's you must have some easy plowing clay or something. My oliver 2150, with a few modifications made 205 h.p. at the p.t.o.,and i pull 5-18's. It has plenty of power but plowing isn't all about power. You need enough weight just to pull the plow through the ground. So 6-18 with a 1030. yeah right, maybe 3 inches deep.

A few years ago a friend tryed selling me his case on land 6 bottom 18 inch plow, After readjusting the hitch, I was able to pull it in 4th gear with my 1030 in one of my sandy loam fields, Then I went out back to a 10 acre field that is sand at one end and very heavy clay at the other, I can tell you that in heavy clay that is way too much plow for a 1030, Tho I was able to pull it. only in 2nd and had to raise it up. He pulled it with no ploblems, cause he owns a 1370

Hey Jeff: You got that right!! I couldn't keep the front end down with my 1175 on 6-18's. Had to remove the back bottom, & even then she had a load.

6-18s is one hard pull!!!! A 930 is not too farm behind a 1030 so I should be ok. I dont have the slab weights I do have a set of wrap around ones I plant to put on it though. I can see how the front end can up up easily these aren't the longest tractors ever made :>)

Well, I think the sales brochure rates the 930 for 5-18's semi-mount and 6-18's on land. The book for my 1030 says 6-18's semi-mount and 7-18's on land. Never tried the 7-18's, but I bet she'd do it. I pull 6-18's in low 4 or high 1. She sure has a lot of guts for a '69. I've only overhauled her once at 15,000 hours because it didn't have enough power to get out of it's own way anymore, but that was 10 years ago. Thank god for M&W's.

Hey 1031: 6-18's in 4th or 5th?? 15,000 hrs?? I spent many hours on a 1030 doing all kinds of tillage. They had cooling problems and the Ring & Pinions were somewhat "Tender". I may be from New York, but at this point I feel like I'm from Missouri. Isn't that the "Show me Sate"?

I havn't had much over the years for cooling problems, aside from keeping the radiator clean. It also got 3 new ring and pinion sets since new, the last one has lasted since we overhauled it and it still doesn't make a horrific noise in 8th yet like the last two. At 15,000 hours, the motor gave up the ghost so we overhauled the whole tractor. I'll put it like this John. At 15,000 hours, we checked the diesel and filled the oil. It would mark it's teritory with every fluid in the thing a whole lot more that a Harley would. The 3-point would hardly lift a 7ft brush cutter. Let me see if my wife still has the pictures of me plowing with it with the front end up in the air. Have you ever seen a 1030 sales brouchure? If not, I'll scan some pages and either post them here for you or e-mail them to you. I'm from Wisconsin, the land of cow sh*t and beer farts.
