My PTO won't disengage. I have the PTO housing taken off and I am thinking it is the Brake. My clutch housing also appears to be warped. has anyone else had this happen?

I will just add that when you engage pto hyd pressure pulls brake away from pto an puts pressure in to clutch pack. when you stop pto pressure is released to clutch pack an also to brake - this allows spring on brake to push against egg shapeddrum.if operating corectly brake should be engaged when AT REST. When you put air tohyd line brake should move away same asif hyd was put too it If not spring or pin as jt said may be broken .If this works Than trouble is in clutch pack. I AM BETTING IT IS PIN . i too am relying on long ago memory!!

If memory serves me there is a roll pin that will tend to break on that assembly. When the pin breaks you will get the same reaction you are describing. Pressure releases the brake when it is applied to the clutches.

When I did the repair to the 1070 we had there were 7 clutches in the pack (PM calls for 6). Someone told me this was a upgrade. Put in the new disc packs and I think you will need to replace the brake. Should be able to get away for less than $150. Can"t remember and it was 10 years ago but the parts aren"t to bad. I think I got it all done for under $100 in parts.

see if there is any pad on the brake put air to hyd. line see if works, check clutch discs i have one someone took the brake out so they could turn shaft for easy hook up, to dangerous. 70 series had spring loaded brake you shouldn't be able to turn shaft with tractor off.

When I hook air to the hydraulic line, does that do anything to actuate the brake or is it fully dependant on the spring?

It has a pad. How thick is it suppossed to be? Also, What else could cause it not to disengage. I dismantled the valve body and it looked good. It only had a slight groove worn in one of the valves and I used some emory cloth to clean it up. And yes I can turn the PTO shaft with the tractor off.

Thanks for your reply.

The housing is made in a slightly egg shape design. This helps the brake stop it better than a smooth, round one.
