I have a 58 model 800 COM wide front everything works on it. The problem i am having is it won't pull a load in COM drive. Example, I am driving up the road in direct drive 8Th gear starting up a steep hill, it starts to bog down so i push it down in to COM well the motor picks RPM back up and the tractor keeps moving for a little bit then it just slows down and stops moving what is wrong?

I just had this tractor split and put in new bearings and a new high range gear cause high range was out. So if i knowed what is wrong i can fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Ryan Leasure

Hey Ryan
The C-O-M is nothing like a tourque or hydra power.
It is more like the automatic trans in your car, hinse the torque converter. Drive it like you do your car when in Case-o-matic, you will like this tractor if you remember that. You would not rev your car up half way and then drop it in drive

Iwill add to all other replys you should check fith engine stopped that throttle moves to stop in back of injegtionpump. Check both foot an hand throttle. If it is not com will be slugish.

Your experience sounds about right. The Case-O-Matic can provide about 20 to 30% more pull power. If you need 50% more to get the job done, the tractor will go to zero speed. You have to match the power need to the gear being used.

My 800 needs some bushings in the transmission to make the direct drive work. I'm putting off the repair because it is so much work and parts are hard to find so I may need to make them.

Sounds to me like the COM is operating fine. Down shift to 7th and run it in direct drive. If you have good pressure and no air noise such as lines sucking then I do not think you have a problem. A good test for this tractor would be in low 4th tied to a heavy load, at full rpm's and normal traction you should be able to slip the tires at shipping weight.

Hey Ryan: Assuming the oil level is correct & you're using proper oil, sounds like the plates are wore, or other problems within the converter.

Could it be that in high gear, steep hill, and pulling a load that it (com) worked right? I hauled a load of straw in 4th, high side, in direct drive. As I'm sure you know, my 830 kicks all forms of a$$, but if the hill I ran into would have been 100 feet longer, I think I would have had a problem in that gear and range. The 800 has 8 gears instead of 4 w/hi and lo? Just curious.

Yes, I just put all new oil in and it is at the correct level. This is my first Case with COM but i run oliver with hydra drive and International with TA and Massey with multi power. So i was jsut guessing that the COM worked like them, am i right? The COM will pull the tractor around to a extent, But sometimes pulling a hill it just slows down and stops like it ain't got no oil pressure, but it has like 120PSI. It don't do it as bad it the low side of the trans. I have not used this tractor for major work yet. As i have only bought 4 months ago after it has been sitting for 6yrs. I also thought that everything may have been working and it was just in to high a gear. I just thought it would stall out and not just stop.

Sorry about long post

Ryan

I'll defer to John S. on this as he knows more about it than I do. Besides the t/a, I haven't run any of the other tractors you mention. As far as I know, you can't stall the engine as long as it's in com and it's working right. If you lose all ground speed and come to a complete stop, the engine will just keep going and heat builds up in the conveter. Not a good idea to let it sit very long w/o moving. Only supposed to use com to get moving and in the tough spots, and go back to direct when you're past it. If it won't start moving on its own in com, don't slam it into direct just to get moving. If it were me, I'd go back out to your hill and try a lower gear and see how it does. Takes some getting used to, but you'll like it once you do.

I sorta figured it would not stall in COM. I will go out and try it in a lower gear. So far I love the tractor.

Thanks Ryan
