Need to put brakes on my 1969 580ck. Any unusual challenges I should expect or word of wisdom from those that have done this?

I just did a brake job on my 1969 580 ck this winter. It was a cold job, but not too difficult. The ramps were worn on both sides, so I replaced everything. The work great now. They used to grind and bind before.

Hopefull, the backhoe frame is notched so you can remove the rear bolt. My frame was notched, but I still had to remove one on the backhoe frame bolts to provide adequate clearance to back out the bolt.

The covers are a real tight fit, so I had to pry like a dickens to get em off. I also had to replace some badly corroded shims. Make sure you keep good track of the shims and put them back as you found them.

I also found one side to be leaking a bit from the differential seal. I pulled that and replaced the outer seal (no differential lock, so no inner seal).

I used a sheet of heavy plastic over the splined shaft to protect the new seal. The plastic worked great as it is a nice slippery surface and protected the seal. I used a old can (can of corn, I think) to seat the seal, and drove it home with the blunt end of a 3/8 inch socket extension. No fancy tools here obviously.

Good luck. Hope it comes out well.

it's a pretty simple job...it's nice to have the built in jacks in the rear of the backhoe.I will generally put the hoe on the ground just so that the machine is supporting less weight over your head. I have seen the housings crack from unequally grabbing brakes one side does too much of the work. this can generally be welded. it's a good idea to replace seals while your in there.

I hope this stuff is not too general, it's definitely made to be worked on my 530 ck is a bit more of a challenge
