311b stalling out

1957 311 b roundnose.....

While digging out sod this weekend for a new garden, all was going well. All of a sudden the tractor would die out whenever any kind of load was put on the motor. When it would start to die out, I would push the clutch in, and the motor would rev right back up. When in netural, the motor ran just fine. Can idle down or take the throttle all the way up. As soon as I up it into gear, and let the clutch out, it wants to die out. The exaust smells "strong", not really a gas smell per say, but much thicker odor to it. No change in look of exaust.

It would seem to be running VERY rich. Could my float be stuck? Do fuel (carb) issues happen that fast and suddenly?

Can a carb rebuild kit still be found for these?

Any ideas, and how to tell if that is the problem, are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Watch the governor to see if it is increasing the throttle when you put it under load. Sounds like the governor may not be doing its job.

your gas tank mite be full of dirt. my brothers would do that ..he would get a hose and blow up thru the the gas strainer.. then run for awhile then do it again after 6 years he cleaned the tank///////

My dad's VAC had dirt in the tank that would move over the hole if the tractor shook around a lot. The tractor would completely stop and then restart after it set for a few minutes and enough gas trickled down. You can always pull the plug out of the bottom of the carb. to check gas flow, but your problem doesn't sound the same.

I have watched for that, and the governor will kick in after the engine has bogged way down, just before it tries to die out.

Any ideas??

Are you leaking any gasoline from the carburetor when the tractor is parked and not running? If the float were stuck in the down position or the needle valve was not seating properly fuel should overflow the bowl and run out the air inlet. Is the tractor sputtering any when you rev it up with no load? I had a condenser go bad in my 300, and it would sputter and pop as you reved it up. I'm sure carb. repair kits are available.

They have a carb kit on this site for like $12. Would be worth changing out the needle. All it takes is one grain of sand to get in the needle and the float never closes, can happen real quick. Usually it won't idle as smooth as usual though. Could be something stuck in the high side idle mixture screw (if yours has high and low screws). I have a feeling that getting into the carb and cleaning it up some will solve your problems. May want to add an inline fuel filter while you are at in. Post again to let us know what you find,
Ed
