thanks for responding ralph-i have that one too - plus two others on pouring bearings,i just wondered if i could replace them the lazy way. i think i will probably wind up converting to rods with replaceable bearings, though i should just do it the old way - might learn a thing or two.

I know guys who have replaced babbitt bearings in old sawmills with roller or ball bearings, when the babbitt finally wore out, so it can be done. I don't have a machine shop so I probably couldn't attempt what Camboted did. I still run babbitt bearings in my Lane #1 sawmill and in my 24" board planer. It's just a hobby but it keeps me sane. Power is supplied by the good ol' CASE LA's.Good luck again!

Now you guys gotta understand, I am in Cambodia, but we just totally rebuilt two DC engines and put in replaceable bearings made from the cam bearings on a Hino V8 Diesel. It does take a little machine time, but they are replaceable, and sure do run smooth. The Hino is a Japanese V*, probably about 800ci, used in large, tri-axel, gravel trucks. So, it can be done and for us much cheaper than a re-pour.

Hi,
I was in a similar fix a few years ago so I found and bought a book called "How I Pour Babbitt Bearings" by Vincent R. Gingery, Published by David J. Gingery Publushing, P.O. Box 318, Rogersville, MO 65742. Very informative and helpful. Good luck, all these old guys who know stuff are dying off. Pretty sad.
