I've finally finished rebuilding my VAC engine and am using my case again. It runs like new one until it gets cold and frosty. Then my carberator frosts up and the tractor starts to miss and run rough. How do I stop the carb from frosting up?

My carb used to do the same thing on my 530. It would run smooth for a while and then freeze up and start missing. I tried to rebuild the carb, but it was to worn out, so I bought a new carb from this website and it runs fine now.

My Case 311 used to do the same thing. Usually when it iced and started missing, I could shut it off until the ice melted and it usually didn't do it any more that day. I guess the heat off the engine block must have warmed the carburetor up? I finally put a curved aluminum shield around the outside of the carburetor to collect heat off the engine block and adjusted the valves. I know, the "adjusted the valves" part sounds stupid (I read that somewhere), but I haven't had any trouble with icing since I did those 2 things.

This is why cars with carbs had a hose down to the exhaust manifold on the intake. A temperature sensitive valve adjusted the flow of hot and cold air to keep it warm until the engine was warmed up. Maybe you can rig something up that will be like those systems. Had a VW when I was in college that iced up until I replaced the preheat hose.

My SC used to do that. But it never affected the performance that I could see. It didn't have to be cold either. Eventually it would go away.

My little Saab Sonett II with the original Solex Carb. would do that on cold mornings. I had to drive it below 50 MPH till it warmed up. Pure frustrating isn't it. With the dual Weber it doesn't do that anymore.
I wonder if you can make a Weber work on your tractor. giggle. Walt

The frosting is caused by heat being absorbed when the fuel is vaporized by the carburetor. When the air is already cool out, it doesn't take a lot to reduce the carb and manifold metals temerature below the not only the dew point, but below freezing as well.

Thats just part of like and how carbs work. After the engine warms up good it should stop iceing up on you. Some people put tin foil and or some sort of side cover on the help with that. Me I just run it till its warm and then go to work.
