My 1963 530CK with the 188 diesel engine has a sheetmetal oil pan. Periodically I run across references to the cast iron oil pan used on the 188 diesel engines on backhoes.

My question is should my engine/backhoe have a cast iron oil pan or a sheetmetal oil pan?

Looking at the parts list doesn't really give me any insights.

Brad

They came both ways. There were several front-end items that were offered as "heavy duty" items. Some cast pans have integral support of the rear front-axle pivot. Tractors with hoes often get driven into rough ground and it's not to hard to put a rock through a tin pan. Thusly, the cast-pan gives some added insurance. If you put a cast-iron pan on an originally tin-panned 188D or 207D, you have to grind a small 45 degree chamfer on the edge of the oil pump. The cast-iron pan has a little less clearance and won't fit without the grinding.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for a cast-iron pan. If one shows up I'll retro fit it.

Now to find one.
