Hey john, sorry for not posting before, but I got the tractor figured out. You can laugh if you want, but i feel like an idiot, Rod caps 2 and 5 were switched around and that was enough to totally lock it up. So I got the whole thing put back together, everything adjusted It was still in time because I never even touched the timing gears and I tried starting it, of course after I put in new oil/filter and coolant and I cannot get it to fire. There is smoke coming out of the exhaust, and I can smell burnt deisel. I am quite sure everthing is correct and I bled out the injector pump, lines and filter. Any suggestions. I was thinking about trying to pull start it maybe get it to turn faster. What do you think?

I'd sure pull it before I tried anything else- not only does pulling spin it faster, but also longer- so everything gets lubed up well, clears out minor air locks in fuel system, warms up the combustion area, etc- it also establishes that there is something definitely wrong if it won't start- then start troubleshooting.

Originally my 830 would start at 0 degrees with use of manifold heater however after having heads removed an installed it lost its starting ability an wee use eather to start it now i know John doesnt like that but wehave used it for many years with no trouble )secre it is to use it sparingly not all at one time - short shots!!!!! ) Some times you have to do things you dont like. One of responders said to pull it . If gear drive i would try that first. also are you sure valve on top of filters is turned shut otherwise little transfeer pump on injection pump will not make fuel pressure to main pump. SINCE YOU ARE GETTING smoke you probably on need to turn it ovetr faster so i wou ld try pulling it first.

You were luckier than I. I bought an 830 and had it for 18 Mo. before it seized up. Someone has swap #3 and 4.
I would bleed the other injectors.
Again is it turning fast enough?
I use the manifold heater.
Recheck the timing.

Hey Josh: Good to hear back. Don't feel like an idiot, because none of us here feel that way, and we have all made mistakes. It's called the "School of Hard Knocks". Been there, Done that. Did you do a valve job? How was it done? A neighbor ground the valves & seats on a 4020 & it wouldn't start when he was done. Recessed the valves way up in the Head & lost compression. What is the Temperature in your shop?

Hey john. Yes I had a valve job on it and had them guys clean the head up really nice as well. I'm not sure how it was done I never measured anything but I'm sure the guy at motor service in town did a nice job, he did the head on my 630 and it worked great. He has worked on these in the past and does the heads for our local case/ih dealer as well. The temp in my shop is the outside temp now, but the weather now is 60-70 degrees.

Hey Josh: HhhMMmm. I'm stumped. I forgot what model you're workin on. Have you cracked the lines @ the injectors & bled them to there? If I were there, I'd double check the valve adjustment. Did you have the pump off?

It's a 930 I did crack the lines at the injectors, but on only 3 of them. To my understanding you do not need to crack them all. If I do tell me. I did not have the pump off. The Valve tappets are adjusted correctly, I could double check.

Hey Josh: I'm stumped. I have never had to crack the lines, but if I had one that wouldn't start, I would. We need someone else to chime in here. Is she spinning over fast enough?
