580CK/D188 Timing Gears?

I need to clarify the timing proceedure for the 188 diesel engine. My service manual does not say what to do with the timing marks on the crankshaft and cam for assembly. I assume that the two marks on the crank are to line up with the one mark on the cam. And then after installing the first cover and idler gear you rotate the cam and idler until the single mark on the cam lines up with the idler gear pointer. At this point you install the pump gear lined up with the other side of the idle gear pointer. Is this correct?

The part that is not explained is the crankshaft pointer in the begining. I wonder why? It leaves me to assume and I always mess up when I assume something.

PS: You guys have been a real big help.

Thank you so much,

Mark

Mark,

Single mark on crank gear goes to the double

mark on cam gear, the single mark on the cam gear

goes to the pointer mounted on the idler gear,

other end of pointer goes to mark on pump drive

gear.

Thanks George,

Did not see the single mark on the cam gear. It is not as prominent as the two marks are.

Considering the point you are at, this is a good time to make a TDC mark on the front the engine - it can be very helpful later since the timing marks on the flywheel with the backhoe/loader can be hard to see. Also, with all the gear marks in alignment, oil pump shimmed and idler gear shimmed properly, engine at TDC of compression stroke, nows a good time to pull the window off the injection pump and make sure the injection marks are aligned. One other note - if you've changed the oil pump - either with a replacement pump, or a pump from a stamped steel oil pan engine, it won't fit the backhoe cast-iron pan without grinding a chamfer on the pump housing.
