When I removed the engine from the bell housing, I noticed transmission oil in the bell housing area, maybe a quart of so. I would assume it came from a bad seal. My sevice manual does not show any proceedures for dissembly. Can the seal be replaced with out removing the torque converter? What has to be removed to get to the seal?

Thanks,
Mark Nagy

Isn't the bell housing supposed to have oil in it? I have a 580Ck with hydraulic shuttle shift and torque-converter drive, and I know mine is supposed to have oil in it. That's why it uses an oil-sealed starter motor.

Well now that makes sense. I inherited this backhoe with a froze engine which I am currently rebuilding, so I have never had a chance to operate it yet or change all the fluids. When I went to pick it up the starter was already removed and oil poured out while moving, but when I pulled the pan mostly water came out of the bell housing section and about one or two quarts of transmission oil. So over the years the rain water must have displaced most of the transmission oil.

Thank for the Info,

Mark

With the engine out, you might notice the "mystery seal" on the torque-coverter hub right behind the teeth that locate into the engine flywheel. It's a big flat o-ring about the same diameter as the flywheel. I have no idea what purpose it serves, neither does my Case dealer. It shows in the Case repair manual and parts list - but the manual does not state what it is there for either. Mine was hard as a rock an fell to pieces, so I replaced it. I may never know why it's there, but it is now new. If you're working on a more-or-less basket case, I suggest you pull the fuel tank off, and then pull the top cover off the torque-converter housing. The torque-conveter pump tends to wear out the little woodruff key on its drive gear - and also, the pick-up tube for its oil has a little screen on the end that is often clogged. Nows the time to check it out. You also might want to check the oil seal inside the starter motor - it needs to be in good shape since the starter-drive end is in oil.

I looked in my service manual, and I can not find any reference servicing this pump, but it does explain how it works.

You refer to removing the fuel tank and the top cover of the torque converter housing. Looking at my unit, there is the power shuttle shift mechanism on the driver side with one plate stacked under it, and some other device on the forward passenger side (as if it were a car) and both bolted to the torque tube housing cover. This Torque tube housing cover also has a square cover approx (3” X 3” Possibly a filter cover?) mounted vertically facing the passenger side of the main torque tube cover. The manual I have only shows the shuttle shift mechanism mounted to the torque converter tube cover and does not show the above other two components.

Do I have to remove all these components down to the torque tube housing? If so, I would also have to remove the steering column and brake pedal – clutch assembly post. Or do I just remove one of the two components on top of the torque converter cover and which one?

You take the entire cover off as a unit. There is a the clutch spool valve assembly, the forward-reverse spool valve assembly, a pressure relief valve assembly, and and a few other components but they come off with the cover. The 580CK does not use the filter-blank with the four bolt holes on the right side. When I had mine off, I took the steering column and pedals off first. Some bolts down go down all the way through the top cover, i.e. some are short and only hold on the aforementioned spool valves. You'll have to ascertain which bolts are long and need to be removed. I had a miserable time getting my tank off since the cross tube for the loader frame is right on top of the tank so you can't lift it off. And, with the long threaded studs sticking down, you can't slide it out. I took the cross tube out which is difficult to say the least. But, for other reasons it needed to come out anyway. I found out later that the four nuts that hold the tank in, are threaded on to removeble studs in the fuel tank. So, I guess, there should be a way to unscrew the studs, and then slide the tank out. You ought to have a manual before you take it apart.

You have the shuttle trans in the rear part & the converter in the front part, You will have to take it down to the last cover the tube & pump bolt to the bottom of that cover, There might not be a filter in where the 4 bolts are in that cover on the right side.
There are things to be checked on in that set up, $$$$ things. My E fisherman@cmgate.com I have all the books on the 580 CK, Going through one now.
