In trying to determine why the tachometer drive wouldn't work on my 830 diesel, I removed the oli pan. I then discovered that my tractor has the counterbalanced engine, with the oil pump driven off from those gears, instead of being driven from the camshaft. As I peered into the upper reaches of the engine, I could see the brass bushing that holds the cable housing, the cam drive gear, and what I believe is the drive gear for the tach cable. The problem is I believe that the small drive gear was installed upside down the last time the engine was overhauled, as the teeth on it in no way contact the teeth of the cam gear. Is it possible to removed the drive gear after removing the injection pump and the brass plug? Or is it also necessary to remove the camshaft? Also I was curious as to when the counterbalancers started to be installed on the 830 diesels. Mine is a 1963 model (high hood), but it is possible that the block was switched out to a later one.

I have a 62 with a low hood, and a 62 with a high hood. Both have the balancer. To remove the tach gear you need to make a puller that screws in just like the tach cable does and pull the entire drive assembly out of the block from the top. I have a puller that I made out of a junk cable. The threads on it are different than anything else so they are very difficult to make. They generally do not pull very hard, but they do pull to hard to try it with anything other than a special puller. Good Luck DK

What we are referring to by those terms has to do with the fuel tank capacity. From the first 730/830 units produced until sometime in 1962, they had a 22 gallon fuel tank. Then the tanks were enlarged to 33 gallons and to fit that on the tractor, the engineers raised the hoodline 4-6 inches higher. The higher hood and fuel tank continued on into the Comfort King models. Look at some picutes of the earlier tractors to see if you can notice the differences.

Thanks for the advice DK. I'll have to look through my scrap bucket for the old cable end that I threw out when I replaced the cable ass'y. Have you been able to pull the adaptor out with the injection pump still bolted on?

Every time I have pulled one it was for a major OH and the block was all stripped down. I will look at the power unit I have in the shed and check possibilities. DK

Looked at the power unit yesterday. It will be kinda tight to get a puller in there with the pump on. You might be able to pull it off if you remove the injector lines. If you weld a loop on the fitting from the tach cable so you are pulling directly in the center of the gear you might be able to pry it out if you can get leverage enough. Only a steady pull though! Good Luck DK
