Thanks everyone for the your input on welding the exhaust manifold elbow. Welded it this morning and have been using the tractor most of this morn. Holding so far, not going to hold my breath untill it breaks again. When I get the time to do it properly, will take manifold off tractor and replace elbow as someone before me welded the 2 bolts to the manifold. So I will have to grind them off, drill and tap to the right size..Again thanks everyone....Keith

I have always had very good luck with nickel rods and a stick welder. Pre heat with a torch and post heat to bring the temp down slow. Here is a CC that I added electric start to. It has been working fine for years.

I've had the best luck in years welding cast using this rod from Muggy Weld. It's a bit pricey, but if keep a few sticks around, it can really get you out of trouble in hurry.

Keith

My personal experience with welding broken cast exhaust is almost 100% unsuccessful. Furnace cast (or exhaust cast) unlike normal gray iron cast is embedded with materials like sand or even sometimes asbestos that are good at withstanding intense heat but are terrible at holding a weld.

I also think that maybe the constant heating and cooling does something to it.

I'd save my welding rod and buy a new repop one.

I rate exhaust cast right up there die cast or pot metal - great stuff until you break it.

keith & jerry ,

Cast iron manifolds are quite repairable if
you stay away from arc weld . Use oxy/acet cast
iron rod and flux , some preheat and some post
heat. I do many manifolds with oxy/acet and have been
quite successful .The material in the rod is nearly
identical to the cast that you are trying to fix.

Below is a link to some cast repair , two picts
are SC exhaust elbows ,both in bad shape and both
have been repaired .

Thanks for the advice George, I have stainless wire for my wire feed, just got finished welding elbow up. Started tractor, let it run untill manifold was hot, then welded it up. The problem was and is ,elbow has been welded before,AND they seemed to have welded the bolts in place also!!! Next job will be to take manifold off to do it right, but I need the tractor today...Keith

Just my 2 Cents About Welding Cast Iron... It doesn't work! My well pump head was made from cast iron, someone thought they drained it for the winter, only later to find it was not. Ice formed inside and cracked all along a seam. I attempted to weld it but it still leaked.

Now I was told that if you heat the "item" prior to welding it helps. However, my wife won't let me put any more stuff in the oven that is not a food product.

Thanks RBF

Hey Keith: Most of the vendors here sell those elbows. They sell for less than $30.00.

John, I know that they are available, But and it is a big "but"...I need the tractor today. Have lot of work that needs to be done. No Time...Also tried to get the bolts out of the elbow, upon close inspection some how they were welded into the manifold...Can see weld back in the thread area on both sides. Oh forgot to mention had been welded before. Thanks...Keith
