Has anyone purchased any of these, and if so, are you pleased with the quality? I know in an original post, the statement was made that these were to be stamped with a 3000 pound die, but some pictues I have seen of these manufactured, make me wonder how they are actually made? The pics in question are:

and

Link

Both of these pictures have me questioning if the fenders are hand hammered.. I also fear this, as it seems that most of the first shipment is advertised as flawed and not having the correct curvature on the top.. Anyone have any input as to wether to purchase these, or keep looking for a good quality used set?

I can put your question to rest because I oversaw the production. I'll post a picture of the dies, top and bottom.

You can take the original Case fender, in the picture, and lay it in the die and they fit like a glove. The only reason there are some marks is the kids trying to take out occasional wrinkles from the pressing process.

They are not serious problems, a little bondo and they will be fine. The top curvature is ok too, but in the edge rod rolling process some have a slight curvature contraction. If you buy a pair you will never notice it. I've got several original fenders and I mix and match them with the new ones on tractors and cannot tell the differsnce, except the new ones are a lot easier to make look nice. Try a pair, you'll like them or John will give you your money back.

Also, we are running a new batch, they are perfect. We learned some things, like using a 300 ton press, oiling the dies, and some tricks on the rod roll, that make them look flawless to me, but between us, I'd buy the cheaper ones, even for a restoration, because chances are you will paint the tractor anyway and a few sploches of bondo will fix you up.

Just to clarify something in reply to Camboted, 04-06-2005 01:29:34
From what I gather by reading this discussion thread, these fenders are made in Cambodia in SE Asia. Is this correct? Also, I thought that the original version of this fender had some heavier gauge bracing welded to the lower inside portion of the shell where it bolts onto the axle housing. Are these fenders being made without such braces? Thanks for your response.

Hey Patrick: You are correct. They are made in Cambodia by a group of Orphans headed by a Missionary who used to farm in the Midwest here in the U.S. They come complete mounted to the lower bracket you speak about.

Just to specifically answer your question re: the pictures you question in the above links. The guy with the hammer is attaching the base bracket (pictured) to the pressed fender. This bracket is about 1/4 inch thick and takes another set of dies to press. They are them spot welded onto the fender skin, so what you get is a complete fender, not just a skin. The other picture is of fenders that have had the rod rolled into them, after being pressed.

Hey Caseman d: I see someone selling those boots for up to $27.50 with shipping. Are you as disappointed as I am that someone would take advantage like that?

I do mainly IH tractors, bt I guess by that remark I know who will not be getting any of my Case tractor parts business..... ..... Don L. Didn't set the price on that item, the buyers did, and he only started the item at $1.00... Also, I don't see where the criticism is warranted, as you advertise your gagues for cheaper than you list them for on ebay, and that is your starting price..... Who is the one that is taking advantage???

If Don is having the fenders made here in the US, I am sure they will be a quality product, and best of all they will be giving someone a job and helping the US economy....

Hey Justin: Have to get more for what sells on Ebay to cover the commissions. If you look, everything I sell on Ebay has a fixed price, because I don't want anyone taking advantage of themselves. I never mentioned any names.

Hey, Caseman you are so wrong! I bought a set and they are great, and I bought the dinged up ones. Yes, they have a few marks from finishing or from shipping, but they are a whole lot better than any used originals I've found. And for $200 for the pair, new! I put mine next to my rusted our originals and the shape is exactly the same

Confused, I am not a metal person but the fenders are just what the Doctor ordered at a fair price. John tells you right up front about them. I am very pleased with them, went to New York and picked up a set last weekend. They are going to look great on my 400 when I paint it. I intend to but another set. Jerry from Ohio

Hey Case: What I have been telling the guys is this: If you need a pair of New, Solid, Functional Fenders, these are the ones. If you want a pair for a showroom Restoration, or for a tractor to be judged, we'll have those later this year. For close to twice the money.

I'm not a sheet metal pro, but it looks like the edges seem to be pretty rough for being stamped. I worked in a steel processing plant that processed steel for G.M. body parts. Sometimes G.M. would send the actual stamped parts to us to check for further steel defects. The parts they sent, stamped, had very crisp & smooth edges. All they needed were paint. I have a hard time believing that these fenders are stamped and have to say they look hand made to a certain extent. I know these people aren't working with the best equiptment, but if you say something is made a certain way.... then you should make sure that it is made THAT way! Just my opinion.

James, they are 100% stamped but the edge has a rolled rod that is added after the stamping. It is not a one step process. The rod rolling is pretty much a lost technology. No one has the machine for it. We broke two, they were two light weight, and finally had to build our own. But the edges you see are not form a press but from the roll. Look at any original pair and you will find plenty of wrinkles and such on them as well. You need to understand, we didnt have a million dollar plant to do these in. We responded to a need that has been out there for close to 20 years. No one else has done anything.

Like I said, I'm not a sheet metal expert. And like I said, you are not working with top of the line equiptment. Didn't mean to sound like I was bashing your efforts. Make me a pair of 36 rc fenders and we'll call it even! lol! take care!

Replacement RC fenders are available from:
Robert Lefever
879 Goshen Mill Road
Peach Bottom, PA 17563
(717) 548-4131

You will need to use your old fender brackets (if You have them) he just reproduces the sheetmetal. Also makes new hoods for the rc. I believe he is listed in Old Abe's news.

James, sorry if I sounded defensive. Re: RC fenders, If I had a pattern we could probably do it, but they would be hand made, you see the dies, and equipment for everything we did cost around $20,000, and those are Cambodian prices. In order to do high quality it takes high quantity.
