Just finished the rebuild on my uncles SC. Sarted on third turn and ran very well, but only if it was half choked. Put her on the dyno and had it up to 16HP. Thinking other HP was held up form being choked i began to push the choke in (NOT good) Engine killed. Now I can't get it started again. Has over 110 compression for all cylinders. I once again disembled and blew out carb. Reset valves once again. Mag has good spark. I replaced the Mag cover and rotor. Three springs in cap were very slugish and tang on rotor had a hole burnt through it. I can put my hand over air intake on carb and gas will flow out of weep hole, so it's getting gas. correct? The tractor won't even pop. Any ideas? Are my specs correct?

Valve clearence .010
Slow speed needle 1 to 1 1/2 out
Full load 2 turns out
Plug gap .030 (Champion J8C's)
Time mag to 3/16 hole in flywheel

Any help would be great. Thanks,DRD

Is it the same carburetor that was on the running tractor before you rebuilt the engine? Did you rebuild the carburetor? I had the same problem on the last tractor that I rebuilt. I put a different carb on it and it ran fine. I think the jets in the carb were too small?

I did have some luck, but it was breif. I took a rag and held it over carb intake, and the tractor once again ran very nice, after I shut her off and tried to restart it she decided she needed a rest again. Checked intake manifold and it looks to be tight to the head. Gasket is tight as well. I bench tested the mag and I can see a nice hot spark from all wires. Also I cleaned out carb for the third time. When carb was off I checked intake manifold and there was gas getting up to it. I think I am having timing problems.

Should I see the 3/16 hole on the flywheel at the exact time the mag clicks?

Are the timing marks on the rotors for the Three peice Case mag (Eagle on top)and two peice Case mag in the same location? I did switch the rotor out of a three peice mag and put it into the two peice mag that is on the tractor. (yes I also timed the rotor too drive).

Keep the ideas coming. Thanks Alot, DRD

DRD, it is a old trick we used checking for manifold (vacuum)leaks on cars, trucks, and tractors to make sure there weren't any leaks. However that was when WD-40 used propane for a propellant. Don't know if current WD-40 still used it. Last time I was in a garage the mech used a propane torch bottle (not lite) to do the same thing.Hold the torch head around the intake ports. Engine will pick up speed if there is a vacuum leak. BUT BE CAREFUL it is explosive.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel. Check the intake manifold to make sure it is sealing on the gasket. Also if you have reinstalled the ferrels between the head and manifold make sure they are fully seated in each piece. You may want to take the manifold back off and clean the intake and exhaust ports to prevent carbon from keeping the ferrels from seating to full depth. Lay a straight edge across all the ports on the manifold to see if they are all on the same plane. If you planed the manifold surfaces, the ferrels may now be too long and hold the manifold away from the head.

Just some thoughts. Did you have the timeing gears off during overhaul? Could be one tooth off. Is it getting air? Chech your air cleaner for blockage.

Timing gears were off for overhaul, but I am positive they were in time when I put them back on. Wouldn't think the tractor would run as smooth as it did before the dyno test if it was out ot time. As for the intake manifold I will have to check it in the morning. Somone told me to spray some WD-40 arould intake ports and see if tractor reacts to it. Has anyone ever heard of doing this?
