Found the plug on the right side, removed #1 spark plug, found TDC on Compression, and found the (D) stamp on the flywheel. I could not locate any other mark (Was looking for a 4 degrees BTDC). SHould I keep looking, or forget it and use my best judgement on it. The mag is newly rebuilt and has a little peep hole to the rotor. My work on timing has improved the back fireing previously posted.

I'm also having a hard time with timing on my '39 D. Not sure whether they changed anything on the later model D's, but my flywheel has the "D" to indicate TDC and "E" just after this. The "E" mark is the point that no 1 exhaust valve should be just closed.

I can't explain it, but some flywheels just seem to be void of the marks and some have been bolted on wrong. Best just to pull the wires and #1 plug, put your thumb over the sparkplug hole and find the compression stroke by feeling for the pressure. Put a piece of wire down the hole and find the top of the stoke. That is TDC
