Greetings, A friend of mine owns a Case 350 B excavator and it will not run. Here is the story as I understand it; Dave is the owner and he has done the following, he ran it until it quit and he pumped the fuel to get it where it is now on its last gasp. Dave then changed one of the fuel filters hoping that this was the problem. He did not bleed the system after changing the filter. He said it was low on lube oil as well. Dave then sprayed starting fluid into the air intake and he said it would run for a little while then die. After many of these episodes he said it quit firing altogether and would just crank over with no response with or with out the aid of starting fluid. It appears as though it has lost compression.
When I arrived Monday this is what I found, no oil in the crankcase showed on the dip stick, and the unit would not fire with starting fluid sprayed in the intake manifold. We put in a gallon of oil in the crank case and sprayed the intake manifold with WD40 while turning the unit over. It still behaves as though it has no compression, it will not run even with the use of starting fluid. Is there some connection between the low oil and the lack of compression? Do these engines have a fail safe mechanism to prevent running on low oil pressure? Also it is possable that Dave did damage to the engine by his many episodes with the starting fuid. How likely is this?
This thing could easily become a statue!!!

Ether might have removed all the oil from the cylinder walls and the rings are not seating good as a consequence. Seen it happen many times with gas motors.

You need to get the fuel system primed and then try to squirt some oil down.

I think the problem to start with was not bleeding the system after changing the filters, even if it just runs out of deisel oil you have to bleed them to get them running again, all air has to be evaculated from the filters and lines. Does he have a manual that leads you through it step by step?? You do need good compression also to start deisel engines, and to much starting fluid isn't good.

Does it have fuel at the injectors when you crank it over? Loosen a line at the injector to see. It's sometimes hard to get one started after changing the filters. The proper way to do it is to start the tractor and let it warm up change one filter and then restart the tractor before changing the other one. Does it build up any oil pressure when you crank it over? Starting fluid is bad stuff, yes he could have cracked the head.
