Bill, I just checked the oil pump fit to the front bearing cap on my 148. The oil pump discharge is in the center of the cap. There is a shim between the pump body and the bearing cap for gear backlash, do you remember seeing that?

My shim is homemade and poorly cut with enough slop around the bolt & locator pin holes that the oil hole was about 1/8 blocked. There is enough slop there that it could have covered 1/2 the oil hole of more.

Something to think about.

Joe

Well, enough time went by that I could work on it without throwing things and I pulled the pan today. The pump on mine discharges into the side of the block. I took the pump apart and everything looked OK except the thin gasket between the halves was missing a piece at the bottom and the top. I guess that would be enough for it to suck air instead of oil through the pickup. So, I need to find either that very thin gasket or a whole different pump. I'll call the CASE dealer and see if they can still get that gasket and the oil pan gasket I messed up removing the pan. Any ideas out there for an affordable rebuilt oil pump for a 148 gas engine?

I was thinking about the shim in your engine. It is interesting that who ever made it was concerned about the gear lash in the pump, but not concerned enough to get the right part or at least do a good job of making one. I guess it worked over the long run though, so he was sucessful in that regard.

There was no shim as far as I remember but thanks for the thought. It has been raining most everyday here and I haven't been able to get back to it to pull the pan. I may end up taking the mast off so I can fit it in my shop. I can borrow my neighbors JD 5400 to lift it off but I keep thinking it's bound to stop raining at some point and that is a fair amount of extra work to have to do.
