We have a 1955 Model 400 Case Gas tractor. The tractor has been overhauled once. We use it mainly in the summer, and it works great it has all the original sheet metal and a full eagle hitch. I like the tractor alot, and it has plenty of power for all the jobs we use it for. What does the public think of them.

Cory,
I have 3 400 case tractors. I am restoring one now. I believe that they have the look and design that Case needed. I have taken this tractor pulling in her work clothes and people could not believe the power this stock tractor has.The tractor will be painted this spring , make a few shows then back to work she goes. This is the 1955 racine that I have.

The model 400 had all the features and reliability to become a top seller in the industry. Maybe Case wasn't in a position to promote them as they should have. I hope someone does a tribute this year for the 50 year anniversary of their introduction.

I believe that Case had lost the "inertia" at that point. They were losing market share badly and had made a serious mistake of setting up practically anybody as a dealer in the 40's and these dealers were as close as 5 miles apart. In the 40's machinery boom this worked, but the middle 50's were not very profitable times for farmers and the close proximity, small Case dealers cannabalized each other. Case engineering fell behind in many of their lines.
I wholeheartedly agree that the "400" should be recognized this year, but the only "400" that will be is the Farmall model if it is up to Case/IH.

Best Tractor Case made. My 7 Uncles Grew up on a 400. I Think between all of them and me we own 8 or 9 Case 400's. Great pulling tractors. Paint up nice too. Wouldn't trade mine for anything.

It is the Case dealers favorite tractor ever. Over 90% of original Case dealers cite the 400 as the best engineered machine for its time. They were very proud to offer a machine with 8 speeds, very fuel efficient engine, and tough transmission and rear end assembly along with a true power steering option. For once, Case was ahead of the competition! It was a breakthrough for Case, who until that time was dressing up the old DC's and they were not selling. Not that there is anything wrong with a late model DC, they were just an old design and the farmer wanted something new.
