Did you look at this tractor? He posted 2 more photos after I commented last night and it sure
looks like what I think it is. What do you think?

Re: Emptypockets' Case - THE SERIAL NUMBER in reply to Tom Railsback, 03-24-2005 06:13:01
third party image

Made Jack walk out in the snow this morning and without grumble called back to say the number on the engine case by the tranny, left side is... D4304859... (my book, 1939) lets go, let me know... does she have some half breed in her to make her special like you fellas are saying, she is coming up on auction as soon as I have some things straightened out with Kim at YT...would like to post so that I can say like Paul Harvey would say..."the rest of the story". Thanks for all the input and thanks for the pic from the manual Tom!

My guess is it is a 39 or early 40 D. Based on a comparsion of 1940D I have here. Right hand clutch lever, trans brake, footrests, wheels, the chrome strip. Mine has the tool box mounted under the seat & serial # (4401351D)still there. Runs nice also. Would like to see picture of right side of engine on mag & generator drive. Wheels look the same as on mine rear and fronts appear to be cutoffs. Foot platform plates #04914AB also appear to be the same. I sure would like serial # off it. Wonder what he wants for it? Chuck

Well.. The side view shows it still has the chrome strips and the back view shows the hand clutch and hand brake both on the right hand side. That means it's probabally a 1939 or early 1940 model. I think I read that the chrome strips were done away with after 1941, but don't quote me on that. And the hand clutch was moved from the right hand side to the left hand side mid production year in 1940 (again, going from memory so don't quote me on that either).
The wheels are spoked which were leftovers from the C series, I think, so I'd lean towards a 1939 model, but I'm betting it's a standard D model. I think the "DH" had 38 inch rear tires, didn't it?

I'd love to know the serial number on it, and have "empty pockets" check to see if it's got 4 forward gears or just 3. He's in Canada, and the ol' book says that the first 500 "D" series were built with the leftover "C" series 3 speed tranny.

You may be right in thinking it's a 39 D. I'd venture to guess though that the rear wheels are cutoffs because rubber tired C/D wheels had solid centers by then. (At least, that's what my parts book shows.) Either way, I think he has a rarer tractor than we commonly see.

Tom.. Is your manual for the early D series, by chance? I've got an old parts manual for my 1939 DC-4 and it covers the standard D as well and I'm positive it shows those very wheels in there with the rubber tires. For some reason it's really sticking out in my mind that they were pictured in there. Probabally for the same reason you just mentioned, that by 1939, I thought they had gone exclusively to a newer wheel configuration for the new styled tractors and it struck me funny to see them in my old manual. That's why I'm guessing that the wheels were leftovers from the C series. My parts manual also shows the wheels with solid centers, like you just mentioned. Probabally a CASE of the factory not wanting to let anything go to waste, if it's good, then use it.. Now you've got me wondering if I'm nuts, so I'll have to go dig out my old parts manual and doublecheck..

I do agree that he may have sort of a rare bird there, though. Those pictures show that rig to be in real good shape and definately a worthy candidate of a restoration. It doesn't look like it would need much to be a runner again.
