Hi everybody. This is my first post. It's kind of a test post, so bear with me; it may get wordy. Here's my question. Last year I... I mean a "friend" of mine bought a new place in the country. Desperate for a way to move snow, and knowing I.. I mean "he" would have many other uses for it, he went tractor shopping. The problem is that he didn't know sh-t about tractors and didn't bother to ask anybody. Long story short, he came home with a IH 4166, arguably one of the few lemons IH ever made. But it looked really cool and had an enormous V-plow fabricated to it. Now I... I mean... all right it's me, I'm the dumb a--. I'm going tractor shopping again and don't want to make the same mistake twice. My only requirements are a 3 pt hitch, pto and above 50 h.p.(oh ya, did I mention the 7 ft bush hog I just had to have that requires 50 hp?). So far I am looking pretty hard at a IH 560 and some Cases; a 730, a couple 930's and a couple 1030's that are for sale locally. I am kind of steering away from the 560 because I read that the final drives are prone to failure and the diesel engine goes through heads. How about the Cases. Any opinions on reliablity? Will they all take loaders? I have more questions but that should be enough for now. Thanx.

Guys you're forgetting the poor old 830! Only difference from a 730 is that it has 1/4" bigger pistons that give it an extra 10 horsepower. Matter of fact I used my neighbor's yesterday, 5000+ hours and has never had a problem in 13 years, gets 100 hrs of use a year. I had a 930 Comfort King that I got rid of when I some most of my machinery, it only had 3300 org. hrs. It was a heck of a machine, extremely well built and reliable. Absolutely bulletproof transmission I agree they will outwork a 4020 on a lot less fuel, and the Case has a 50 gallon tank. The 1030's did have some transmission and rear end problems early on, but if it's still running today it's probaly been corrected or never a problem(not over worked). Only Drawbacks: 1.The brakes were not the greatest when new and many need repair today, but it's not that hard to do. 2. The powersteering wasn't the best. Mine never failed but wasn't very smooth and had a "choppy" feel.3. If you ever plan to resell it someday, the resale isn't too good for what reason more people don't like these machines I don't understand. If I recall they were 2nd in line as the most expensive tractor to Deere when new.

A 730 standard would do for what you want but a 930 diesel comfort king is bullet proof. A loader would fit on either very well. I have two in use yet on my place and they work year round from feeding cows to snowplowing to field work. The PTO is high on the older ones but anything can work behind it. Good cheap power and lots around for parts if needed.

have a 931,which is the last of the 930 ser.
Will get too hot when working it hard on a hot day. Then it might crack a head if you don"t let it cool down before shuting down.

Caveman

I've heard this overheating thing before but my neighbor bought a 930CK new when I was a kid and no tractor got worked harder and never gave one ounce of trouble.

Not abused except once and its is too bad I didn't have a camera. I was 16 and the owner and I had stopped at the local tavern after a day of field work before we went home to milk the cows. He had the 930 and I had his 400b.

After my boss had had a couple of beers another neighbor stopped by with a brand new 4020 JD and got to bragging about how much better a tractor it was than the Case.

Well, as things go after awhile they made a bet as to which tractor could out pull the other. So I was sent outside to unhook the plow and the tractors were hooked drawbar to drawbar. Well after about 5 seconds of a lot of squealing rubber and flying rocks the JD made one great big bang and the Case took off like a rocket with the JD in tow. Quite the sight watching my neighor tow the JD the 5 miles to the JD shop. I don't recall the owner of the JD ever bragging it up again.

I do not remember what broke in the new JD but I often wonder if he paid for it or if it got warranteed.

Jerry

 that's easy... in reply to caveman2717, 03-22-2005 12:32:34
...a good 930 that hasn't been abused would be an easy choice. Plenty of power for what you need, easy to drive, easy to use for lots of different jobs, diesel is easy on fuel...probably the best tractor Case made. The 730 is also an excellent choice...same basic engine just 2 less cylinders. I think the early models are just as fun to drive as the D-O-Ms. As a kid we had a gas 700 & it was bullit-proof. (If you guys knew my Dad you would agree.) Either one is a good choice - decision may rest on the best tractor/deal available to you.

If they are all about the same condition take either the 730 or 930. They will do the job you are looking to do and do it more economical than the 1030. Spent many hours on a 730 and brother-in-law had a 930. Both were very reliable and if they are the Comfort King versions great to drive.

In stock form all of the 30 series cases are tough. Most of the case equipment is built really heavy. As far as I know the tractor with the biggest problems were the 1030 rear ends. This was mainly because the tractors had the guts pulled out of them. I believe a few of the 930 had bearing problems. Something about using metric bearings on a standard sized shaft, but this was only for a short run. The 730 and the 830 are good sized chore tractors. The manuverabilty of the narrow front is good. The case wide front are a little awkward in a small area but are fairly rugged. If you really want a good chore tractor look at the case-o-matics. Many people will bad mouth them but they are great for blade work, loader work, and just about any other chore that you can think of. The biggest problem that people have with them is they sometime grind when you shift gears as the cluth plates get a little warped from getting to hot. I have never read or saw anybody that needed transmission gears for a case-o-matic. Good Luck with your hunt.

I like IH's, but I'm not sure I would buy a 560. IH sold more tractors each year than John Deere up until 1958 when the 560 came out. It is supposed to be the worst tractor that IH ever built and the IH 806 (100 hp) is supposed to be one of the the best. My neighbor has a IH 460 diesel, which had a cracked head. I don't know that much about the Case 30 series models that you listed. All my Cases are older.

Ran a 930 deisel from when I can remember. Good tractor. Very reliable and would pull and pull. Still in use on my uncle's farm. The 730 would probably do what you want but I can't speak for it.
