Case 580CK diesel engine froze?

I have inherited a case 580CK with the diesel engine. The previous owner told me that the last time he used it, it was running fine but when he shut it off, shortly after it would not turn over. He removed the starter and attempted to rotate the engine by prying the flywheel gear with no success.

Other than complete dissassembly, is there anything simple that could be addressed.

I fear he got it hot prior to turning it off and it froze on shut down. Or could it have dropped a valve and wedged into the head?

Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks,

Mark

Thanks Dave for your input.

I just picked up the tractor today and brought it home. I went to drain the oil and the oil plug was gone. I called the previous owner to see if he drained the oil after it quit, but he was not home. I suspect the oil plug may have come out while it was running. This would explain the freeze up. Now my concern is the crank. If I have time, I will find out tomarrow when I remove the pan and bearing caps.

If it was out of oil, what are the chances of a ruined crank?

And if the crank is scored, how long would it last with just replacing the bearings? I surly do not want to remove the engine. Or is that not so difficult? I see that the front end has to be completely removed to pull the engine & posibbly the model 33 frame.

One other question, are the brakes suppose to work if the engine is not running?

If you plan on keeping this 580 for a while, it would be worth your time to pull the head and the pan. I would probably pull the pan first and make sure your bearings look good, pull the head next its not difficult nor complicated. Take a block of wood and a hammer and free up the cylinders...just a thought...it's all fixable and workable.
