Speaking of oil filters

Changed oil for the first time in my VAC and thought I would also change the filter. Took it off (near the starter) and it looks like it might be dry in there. What's up, isn't it pumping the oil through the filter? Is something plugged? There is a line coming out of the block to the filter. Should I try starting or turn over the engine with the filter removed and see if there's any flow? Probably not serious if it isn't filtering because I just use the tractor for snow plowing. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well first of all is the stem tube still in there? Sticks up about 3-3/4". You need that to get the oil up to the top of the filter media, otherwise the oil will just run back into the sump.

If the tube is there, the filter hsg may be blinded off at the the block gasket. I do that sometimes if the oil pressure is low and I want to keep running the tractor.

You can screw a mason jar down into the existing housing and start the engine for a look-see. Jar won't seal perfectly but will contain the oil with some seepage.

The stem tube is there. Will give the Mason Jar trick a try. Thanks for the suggestion

It's real common for the passages in the filter adapter to be plugged up with goo. Remove the adaptor from the crankcase and give it a good solvent bath. Check the passages in the crankcase too. I've seen those totally stopped up.
