580CK or 530 torque converter gasket on flywheel?

I've got the engine out of my 580CK. It has torque-converter drive similar to my 530. Question is, there is a large ring on the outside of the torque-converter - may be rubber, but it's so old it's now hard and brittle. My parts book and service manual lists it as a "gasket between torque-converter and flywheel", but says nothing else. This one seems to be broken since it has one gap in it and now looks like a big piston ring. But, I'm not sure, maybe it was made that way. I have no idea what the function of this thing is. I can see that the outer diameter of the ring will fit inside the recess of the flywheel when I put the engine back it, but I can't see any purpose for it. So, now, not knowing, I'm hesitant to put the engine back in until I know. Any input appreciated.

I just bought the new ring at my local IH industrial dealer for $14. They didn't know what it is for either, but, now've I've got a new one.

John, I have the engine out of one now also , service manual calls it a sealing ring . It was originally a reasonably soft rubber. Book doesn't explain what is being sealed and why.

Well, I guess I'll order a new one, hopefully it's available. I've got several Case manuals that show it, including some ag. tractors like the 530 - but none of them say anything about it other than "replace with a new one when assembling." Just had a surprise when Case said they can't get the two little flat o-rings where the transmission pump bolts on. The only purpose for that big ring that comes to mind, is maybe it acts as a thrust shock-absorber so the flywheel is not in direct, metal-to-metal contact with the torque-converter? There is no dust or oil to seal, so I'm kind of stumped. But, I don't want to leave it out, and find out later it does have a purpose.
