I have a 1941 case d that when you start it, it will run about a minute and then begins to pull down and starts to stall, at this time there is smoke coming from the breather tube on the valve cover. After it is shut down, you can turn it over with the crank and is stiff the first time over and then frees up. It also will smell hot. Can anyone give me idea as to what the problem might be and where to look? Any information would sure be helpful. Thanks.

I am just doing a 1939 model D up and my radiator core was jammed solid with rust etc. Likewise mine used to run hot and i put it down to: a, radiator core blocked, and b, ignition retarded a bit too far. Hopefully when i've done it, it should be ok. Looking to renew the centre main bearing to take up some of the crank end-float as that was also badly worn. Hope you get your D sorted ok. Andy.

I hate to bear bad tidings, but don't shoot the messenger! OK?? It sounds to me like you have a overheating problem, you have probably scored a cylinder or two. You will definately (If you want asweet running engine?)have to tear the engine down to get a good fix, but the culprit is the cooling, timing, or blown head gasket or cracked whatever?? You will have to search it out. Now, the cause is probably a plugged radiator core. We just remanufactured 4 DC's, and every one of them had plugged radiator flues, some as many as 90%. The radiators looked good, etc. but were plugged tight with rust and other junk. It took a committed rodder hours on each core to open them up. I would say you are due for a major re-build if you want it right. If you just want it to run, and want to buy some oil, take off the radiator and check the head gasket. LOL!
