gasket between head and cover

Hi FOlks, I have been serching the archives for any methods of installing the above mentioned gasket. I just replaced a head gasket on a 188(72 580CK) and coolant is POURING out of the area between the head and timing cover.
I didn't have a new gasket so used some silicone.
Is there any way of fixing this short of pulling the head again? And if I have to pull the head, what is the best method of sliding the head down the studs without messing up the gasket?
Thanks
Bill

I have done more of those than I care to think about, Take the bolts out of the water pump housing and use a large screwdriver, at the top where the flange is for the gasket to sit on drive the screwdriver in from the side at the gasket area on the head and the water pump housing above, not into the gasket area, this will force the casting ahead enough to slide a new gasket in from the side. You probably will be able to work the old gasket out with a thin strip of metal forced in from the side. I hope that you did not put the bolt in behind the water pump as you will have to remove that if you did, if you did, this time see how far you can throw it. I have worked on these engines since they came out and have ditched many of those bolts, all that I ever removed. mEl

Well, I tried the tip given to me by mEL and it worked great.
Thanks a lot, saved a ton of time.

Thanks.... I will give it a shot in the morning.
Yeah, I thought about what use that bolt was for but not being used to these engines, I put it back in.
Thanks again,
Bill
