Plowing snow today and one driveway almost finished and clutch pedal would not disengage the clutch. Something broke inside and the pedal has no tension. What's your best guess as to what it might be that broke?

I have only the operator's manual so have no schematics (repair manual) to look at. Since the problem is inside the housing, it no doubt means splitting the tractor. Appreciate any advice anyone might have in this regard and procedures for correcting the problem. What are the steps for splitting the tractor? Anyone have a manual that walks you through it with the VAC?

There is a Half ball as I remember it, on the end of the rod that connect the clutch pedal.
Mine broke several years ago, just after I replaced the clutch bearing.
Welded end back on and it has worked fine.

Before you tear it apart, hook something to it and pull it a little to see if you can get it to release. I think the clutch is just stuck. I had this happen to me once when I was mowing. I figure the lining is getting bad though. It wasn't too long after the first incident that I had to tear it apart and replace the clutch lining which had came loose. Those clutch plates don't have enough rivets in them to hold the lining on good.

The pedal has no tension on it whatsoever--it is just free wheeling,i.e. the pedal did not stick in the depressed position. Appreciate all the suggestions from the guys on the site and will no doubt need some more input as I tear into this. Are clutch parts, readily available for this tractor? Thanks again. Nobody got on me for the typo "happed". What a great bunch of guys!

When you try starting the tractor with it in gear, is the clutch released or is the engine and transmission still tied together?

When it went out it was in gear and had to pull it out of gear without clutch to stop the tractor. Got it back in the garage by starting it in gear and then killing the engine with the switch, as the pedal does nothing. So I can start engine while in gear, but cannot get it in gear with engine running.

Start it in 4th. gear and with it idled down, hold the brakes and see if you can cause the clutch plate to slip a little. That's what I did to get mine working again the first time it happened. What ever was stuck popped loose. The next time it happened, I couldn't get it loose. I tore it down and the clutch lining had pulled off the clutch plate. Be careful and don't run over anyone. :)

I got my clutch plate re-lined locally. Don L. ([email protected]) or John Saeli ([email protected]) may have parts. Some parts may also still be available from Case/IH.

Manuals are available from several sources including YTMag.

Splitting a VAC is a fairly simple job. You can do it with nothing more than a floor jack for lifting power if you have a little help. A roll-around shop crane makes it really easy.

As far as the clutch release problem goes, there are several things that could cause that. Pressure plate, throwout collar, pivot arm, link rod etc. You'll have to open it up and take a look.

My email is open if you have more questions.

Thanks for the info and appreciate opportunity to confer via e-mail, If I need to. Well, out to plow the other driveway--with my snowblower--not near as much fun as blading with the VAC, but glad I have the backup.
