Has any of you guys ever messed with the steering gear on a 940? You can turn the steering wheel almost half a round before it does anything. I just wonder if the bearings inside the gear are worn out or what? Any hints before I tear it apart? Thanks, Larry

Larry,
I faxed you some pictures od the 940 steering system. To start with I would turn the handle and watch for movement. If your not getting movement to the steering arms then it's possible it could be in the worm gear. Once you see the pictures I think you will know what I'm talking about. Could also be from loose joints also.

We had to rebuild the steering gearbox in our 930 6 speed about 25 years ago. What I remember was a lot of needle bearings that were shot. The missaligned gears had warn to the point that they were hard to adjust without binding in certain places. Do you have a CK, or a rear seat tractor? I have a rear seat tractor for parts that might have some parts that you could use. Page me with a post if I can help. Every time I open my email I get loads of crap as thanks. DK

THIS IS A COMFORT KING, I'VE WATCHED THE SHAFT GOING IN AND OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR. NOTHING HAPPENS FOR ABOUT HALF A TURN, SO I KNOW THE PROBLEM IS SOMEWHERE INSIDE THE GEAR. I JUST THOUGHT THERE MIGHT BE SOME HINTS AS TO WHAT PARTS TO EXPECT TO START TRYING TO FIND OR IF IT'S AS SIMPLE AS SHIMMING SOMETHING INSIDE THE STEERING BOX. I FIGURED I'D JUST HAVE TO TEAR IT APART AND SEE WHAT'S WRONG. I WORK ON FORD TRUCKS AND CARS AT A DEALERSHIP, SO I'M SURE I CAN FIGURE OUT THIS OLD TIMEY TRACTOR I GUESS. THANKS, GUYS, LARRY

If this is the cross shaft, there is an adjusting screw on the right side, loosen the jam nut & turn the screw in enough to just remove any endplay. IF the play is in the steering wheel shaft, it is adjusted by adding or removing shims between the housing & the bearing carrier on the bottom.

The slack seems to be in the steering wheel shaft (input shaft) I've adjusted on that screw and it hasn't helped. I thought I had read something about shimming inside the case but it's been awhile. Thanks for your input. Larry
