I have a 1941 SC(#4501283) my father and I are restoring. Runs good, have all the necessary parts, and getting ready to paint. The problem I have is with the rearend. In 4th gear, it sounds like a jet plane taking off. The other gears are nice and quiet. Could it be a bad gear, bearing, fluid? Any help or advice would be appreciated. We are only going to use it for showing and parades, but I also like to take the kids for a ride on a wagon I made to pull behind. It is not going to fly apart is it?

I am in the process of rebuilding my SC rear end right now. Both axle seals leaked badly and needed to be replaced is the reason I started on it. It made all the normal Case noises. I found the countershaft gear that drives the differential gear to be badly pitted and I am replacing it with another one. I also found one axle bearing to be in pretty bad shape. I haven't taken the other axle apart yet to find out what shape it is in, but my parts tractor I was going to rob a bearing out of had pitting in all the axle bearings, so I am buying new bearings. The chains were loose enough that they had worn into the bottom of the Case. I have spent more than $200 for bearings and seals so far. This is a tractor that I would call in good shape and my dad owned the tractor for the past 25 years. I am assuming that after I get this back together the rear end will be much quieter.
If you haven't looked into the rear end yet, then pull the top cover off, change the oil, adjust the chains, check bearings, etc. You will be happy that you did this BEFORE you paint the tractor.

Whine in 4th gear on SC is normal. We had a '41 when I was a kid and I have a '44 now. Flushing the rear end and using new 85W140 will quiet things down a bit.

Our brand new 53 SC made noise in 4th so its not going to fly apart, I think that is probaly drive chain noise, what do you other Case guys think?

Also, I sure wouldn't be pulling my kids in a homemade wagon in 4th gear! I'd probaly stick to 2nd maaaaaybeeee 3rd if they are bigger kids.
