In the VAC parts book , they make mention of a engine serial # break above or below 4700000 for a certain part. The part changed around 1950,or there abouts. How does one cipher a "engine" serial numbers to a exact date?

This is from Case VA series manual Rac 258.

Engine serial nrs used in VA series in chronological order:

VA-124 A + 4 or 5 digit nr
VA-124 B + 4 or 5 digit nr
VA-124 C + 4 or 5 digit nr
VAA-10,000
VAB-12,908 (recent poster had this in a '46 VAC)
VAC-22,883
A-4700001 (I think this is 1949)
72-B-11914
72C-09131
72D-+ 5 digits
72E-+ 5 digits 72F-+ 5 digits (have seen this one in a '54)
72G-+ 5 digits (This engine in my '53 VAC13)
etc

Re the 2 digit + letter + 5 digits serial nrs I.E. 72G-#####: The 72 indicates the type of engine assembly (VTA-1072) and the letter indicates the sequence (chonological?). The 5 digits are the serial nr of the individual engines.

QUOTE...Because of the fact engines are manufactured at Rock Island for other machines such as combines and because of the need for replacement assemblies as repair items, there is no definite relation between engine serial number and tractor serial number UNQUOTE.

So clear as mud huh? Looking at a parts manual the most prominent engine changes occurred between the serial nrs VAC-124, VAB, A4700000 and 72 engines.

Re b/a A4700000, the eagle hitch hyd pump drive gear was 7/8" wide before A4700000 & 1-1/16" after. The engine cam gear was changed at tractor serial nr 5365687. Logically the cam gear was changed to accomodate the wider pump drive gear, or is that grabbing at straws???

When someone posts an engine serial nr you can pretty much guess the year range. Also some engine serial nrs along with tractor serial nrs are posted in the tractor registry on the left.

If we all got together and posted our tractor + engine serial nr, we could probably get close to the year by the engine nr, but engines get changed out and ..... enough already, time for a dark beer .....

The way I read the manual it seems that to get a date for that engine you'd have to know the dates of the various groups and then work the sequence numbers to come up with an approximate date. It appears that you'd have to have daily factory production records to accomplish this but I could be WAY off on my 'figgerin'!
