The oil bearing seal on the brake shaft is leaking a little oil and while I am doing a brake job, I want to replace the seal. There is no diffential lock, so I believe there is only one seal. My question is how do I get it out. Do I need to remove the carrier asssembly cover? If so, how do I remove the cover once I have the recessed screw out. Prying it only moves it 1/8" or so. If I dont have to remove cover, how do I get the darn seal out? It's in there pretty tight.

Thanks

Well I have just gone through this for the first time myslef (on a 580D), but I had a difflock seal to replace as well.

The brake cover comes off and you remove the brakes completely.

All I used was a screwdriver and mangled the seal enough to allow the screw driver to get in behind and pop it out.

Make sure you clean all oil and grease off everything before you replace the brakes.

If by the carrier assy you mention, you mean the brake housing, then no it does not come off. On mine (and most likely yours) you will notice shim plates between the housing and the transaxle hoausing. This is for preload on the bearing.

This leads onto checking the bearing whil you have the brakes apart. Check if there is any movement in the shaft (side to side). If so then you may need to look into replacing the bearing or adjusting it up. Mione was OK so I have not had to do it yet.

Hope this all helps

Mick
PS I am by no way an expert in this, just a novice with his own machine to play with, learning what I can
