I recently located a nice VAC for sale. Can anyone tell me how many of these tractors were made and if they are considered rare or not. It is a 1947 model with narrow front end and a hitching system that was apparently the predecesor to the eagle hitch. The metal is in very good shape and the rear tires are new. It has been converted to 12 volt electrical and he will throw in a 2 bottom case mounted plow. Any help is much appreciated.

Got a 51 myself. Not really rare, but they are a gem of a tractor for their size

I bought a 51 for $800. Probably paid too much for it, but it had new rear tires which were worth half the price. I have spent a lot of money fixing it up because it had a lot of problems that didn't show up or were misrepresented. They are not very rare, over 150,000 VA series tractors made in 14 years of production. If you find a VAIW or VAH or one of the other rarer VA's they are worth more. I wanted this one since I have my Father's 51 SC. Check the amount of oil pressure real close. Mine only runs about 10 lbs. which is low, but an old mechanic friend of mine said it will still run for a long time. My SC has almost 30 lbs. pressure as a point of comparison. I would be curious to hear from other VAC owners on how much oil pressure their's have.

My case manual for a VAC oil pressure says 10 to 14 pounds on the oil gauge. Hope this helps.

30 lbs oil pressure all the time. Manual says it should run 60, I think, will have to double check. I bought mine for $775 with a blade a year ago. Drove it off the trailer and started working with it. Did some work on the electrical last year, need to put a new valve cover gasket on it, but i worked with it for 2 1/2 or 3 hours last night, no problems. It is just a little too light for all the stuff I need to do. Good thing I have access to a much bigger tractor anytime I need it from my neighbor. If his JD2940 won't do the job for me, I figure I really don't need to be doing it.

Unless the later ones were different you were looking at the wrong numbers. My 1949 VAC the gauge only goes to 30psi. It would be a little hard to tell how much pressure it had if it way beyond the guages capability. That seems awul high to me My 1030 only carries between 45 and 50psi when hot and that is normal for it.
