I am looking at getting a 400 standard 1956 model. What are some possible problems that I can expect that is common with the 400 series tractors. I heard that the foot clutches often would break. Is this common? What else should I be watching for? Thanks for any insight.

I have several of these of which I use 2 of them quite often and have not had any clutch problems. One of them I went through fairly well when I got it and after looking at the clutch and how it is made I cant think it will ever be a problen-----very straight forwad and sturdy. The correct spark plug and changing points is essential for them to run nice.Often times the brakes need some help but are very simple to work on. Thanks Neale, That is good info on the clutch. I haven't ever had trouble on any of my D series, but having heard a complaint on the 400, I just didn't know. Do the brakes adjust like the later Ds?

Yes there are like the late D, same style different disk. Never heard clutch problems being a 400 trademark. Sounds like a rumor from the the land of green[l]ies .

I dont know about d brakes----- the racine 400 brakes are of the ramp and steel ball type as used several other brands----adj by tightning the pullrod going into the brake housing.often times it is neccessary to remove the housing cover and clean. mast times new discs are in order----Neale
