I need help! I'm working on an 885 diesel 3 cyl. I put in a new crank and bearings and had the injectors and pump rebuilt. I have it all together except for the injector pump. I have a manual and I still do not completely understand the pump timing. Also, I did not take this tractor apart and I am kinda in the dark. The manual says to take the valve cover off and turn the crank until #1 cyl is on TDC and the timimg pin slides into the timing hole in the flywheel. That part I did and understand. Then install the pump drive gear by placing the master tooth at 4 o'clock and when you push it into the tractor it will rotate to the 6 o'clock position because of the cut on the gears. I also did that. Putting on the pump is straight forward because there is only one way to install it and have all the lines, etc. line up. It will not start. It will make smoke and when I gave it a taste of ether it made a couple of turns and quit. My problem is that I am not sure what the manual is calling the master tooth. The pump drive has two teeth that I could concider as a master tooth. One is a double wide tooth and the other is a double wide tooth groove. The double wide tooth groove seems to be the one that is pictured in the manual as the master tooth, but it seems that it is 180 degrees out of time. Can anyone straighten me out with this problem? Thanks in advance.

You ask about the master tooth. If the injector pump mounts vertically like a car distributor then, With the injector pump removed there will be a spline extension which sets on top of the oil pump shaft. If you remove this extension, you will see the master spline. If this is not the problem, the crank shaft may be timed for gas instead of deisel. There is a D & G on the crank drive gear that is timed to the Dot. If this is not clear to you E-Mail me and I will try to explain better as I have been redoing a Case 885. [email protected]

If it will run on ether, you probably have the pump timed at TDC exhaust and beginning of intake stroke, known as rock position. Do you have the proper manual, i found sometimes the aftermarket manuals can be vague. I have a DB manual for that engine. I can look in the morning when i get to work and see if it describes the procedure better.
