removing sliding gear shaft in LA

Today I tried to remove the sliding gear shaft in my LA as I need to have some machine work done on it. According to my service manual all you have to do is take the bearing cap off the right side and loosen the diffrential gear caps and remove the shifters and forks and it can be removed I have done all this and also pulled the bearings and caps on both ends. I still can not get it tilted up to clear the casting on the left side. It does not lack much to clear though. The biggest slidding gear in it hits the differential gears and will not allow enough movement to remove the shaft. The shaft is the later style that is larger in diamater and with the fixed differential pinion. (pinion is cut into shaft not held on by snap rings as were eariler tractors). I have tried many combonations with the sliding gears in many diffrent places with no luck. It appears to me that my only choice is to loosen the bearing caps on the diffrential pinion to the point that they come off. If I do this as I see it the diff will drop and give me the clearance that I need but is this really nesasary? It appears that if the diff were to drop it could be a pain in the butt to get it back in place (just speculating). Any help or input would be great

I just had the same experience while helping a friend with his LA. You are correct about loosening the differential pinion. We were able to change the shafts, then slide the pinion back and replace the bearing cap. Nothing fell out of place. Good luck.

If I am understanding you right all that you had to do was remove the snap rings and slide the pinnion on the shaft. This will not work on my tractor as my tractor has the newer style shaft. On my tractor the pinnion and the shaft are a unit and the pinnon can not be removed. It seems as though I will have to remove both diffrential caps and drop the the diff down. Did you do this?

We took the bearing cap off the left side and slid the shaft and large gear to the left. This gave us enough room to replace the shaft and slideing gear. We had the reverse idler out but I don't know if it was neccesary.

Kid, my experience is with DC's, but I believe you might as well pull the differential, even if you discover a way to remove the sliding shaft. You will need some help as it is a heavy sucker, but since it drives the brakes, and you are this far into it, you should check the seals, even if the bearings run smooth. My experience has been that, with the old Cases sitting a while, the shaft rusts up some, and the seals go real fast once you start running it. Might as well pull it, polish the shafts and put in new seals and give the bearings a good inspection. LOL!
