1969 580CK. I took out the right side brake assembly with little problem. Started in on the left side and when I removed the rear (upper) stud, transmission fluid started flowing from the hole. Thankfully (??) it is about 7 deg F out, so the fluid is pretty viscous and not much leaked. I put the stud back in to stop the flow.

Clearly the transmission seal is shot. My question is, if I take off the brake housing with a bad seal will it drain all of my transmission fluid? The tractor is resting on an incline, rear down so gravity is not on my side. Should I drain the tranny from the drain plugs first?

Also, where in the service manual is this part fo the transmission housing shown. If it matters, I have a shuttle shift.

I am no expert, I have done this once on my own hoe.

No, not all the oil will drain out. Obiously some will other wise there would be no need for a seal.

If you have a diff lock then there are two seal that will require changing (i am told it is ususally the diff lock seal that goes).

There are two concentric shafts, one for the diff lock and the other that the brakes run on. There is a seal between the two shafts. A little fiddly to get out and you need a piece of tube sized correctly to get it in.

This might be a good opportunity to change the oil if you do not know its history. Oil doesn't cost much and it hold well under 20 litres.
