Joe, Thanks for your reply, I got the timing figured out, I just wondered if theres anyway to determine the compression stroke, I'm doing this on myself without a crank, I can turn it over slowly be turning the fan& belt, Anyway thanks for any replies,,,,, Burnsy

Put your thumb on the #1 spark plug hole while turning and you can feel the compression.

Alternately pull the valve cover and watch the #1 cyl rocker arms, intake valve will be closing just before the piston starts up on the compression stroke.

Either way, look in the plug hole with a pen light on the compression stroke, you'll see the piston top moving up about 1" before it is TDC.
